ABIDING IN CHRIST
Brief back round
Right before we read this verse, Jesus had just had the last supper in the upper room with his disciples, to celebrate the passover. Here is where our Lord Jesus exposes Judas as the one who would betray him.
when Jesus exposes Judas as the betrayer to his disciples Judas arises and departs.
Proceeding after, Jesus tells his disciples, “ arise let us go hence” on their journey to the garden where the bible says that Jesus prayed so intensely that he bled great drops of blood, and that is where Judas comes to arrest Jesus, and the next day Jesus us crucified.
These last words must have been very crucial, since it would be the last teaching\parable that Jesus would give his disciples before Jesus would be crucified.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
TO ABIDE MEANS TO MAKE CAMP - WHERE YOU REMAIN.

Jesus states here, “ I AM THE TRUE VINE”
Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:
Jesus had his last supper in the upper room with his Disciples and after exposing Judas as the betrayer.

On their journey jesus begins to tell his Disciples this.....
I AM - THE DOOR = THE ENTRANCE TO YOUR FUTURE
I AM - THE GOOD SHEPARD = YOUR PROTECTER
I AM- THE RESURRECTION AND LIFE = YOUR SALVATION
I AM- THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE = THE ANSWER
The famous saying...
“I AM THAT I AM”
We see God say this statement to Moses who God calls through a burning bush and tells him he is going to use him to deliver Gods (his) people form slavery. Moses says to God,
“WHO I AM??”
“WHO I AM??”
Who =
Who -
A psychologist once said “we are who we experience ourselves to be.”
Moses was who he thought he was:

betrayer (his family in Egypt)
unqualified (speech impediment)
Will be taken as a joke
This is all that Moses had experienced in his life, therefore he allowed those things to
define him. LACK OF IDENTITY and not abiding in the vine.
Often, we feel the pressure to define ourselves through our jobs, financial status, successes, grades, appearance, what other people say about us and many other means and social media.
But Jesus Says, “I AM THAT I AM”
In other words he said.....
I AM W/E YOU NEED ME TO BE!
YOU ARE LOST - I AM THE LIGHT
YOUR ARE WEAK - I AM ELOHIM = POWER AND MIGHT
YOU FEEL UNLOVED AND SCARED - I AM THE ABBA FATHER
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
YOU ARE SICK AND IN NEED OF A MIRACLE - I AM JEHOVAH RAPHA = HEALER
YOU ARE IN AN OPPOSITION - I AM YAHWEH SHALOM = PEACE
I AM WHATEVER YOU NEED ME TO BE!!
I AM WHATEVER YOU NEED ME TO BE!!
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Note this,
it wasn’t that Moses did not believe God, never do you read in those passages where Moses said he doubted God, but Moses doubted himself!
Because you define yourself by your experiences, and all Moses had experienced was failures, because he was not connected to the true vine.
Jesus says

My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof,
And planted it with the choicest vine,

And he looked that it should bring forth grapes,
And it brought forth wild grapes.
And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah,
Judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.
What could have been done more to my vineyard,
That I have not done in it?
Wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes,
Brought it forth wild grapes?
And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard:
I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up;
And break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:
And I will lay it waste:
It shall not be pruned, nor digged;
But there shall come up briers and thorns:
I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel,
And the men of Judah his pleasant plant:

For righteousness, but behold a cry.
Woe unto them that join house to house,
That lay field to field, till there be no place,
That they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
The original vine that God had chosen and called to bear much was Israel.

The national symbol of Israel is a golden vine at the temple gate and the symbol on the Maccabean coins.
Jesus says,
“I AM THE TRUE VINE”
That implies that there is a false vine.
FALSE VINE = The Jewish leaders at that time. They followed that law, but for every law they followed they added 10 more unbiblical laws to it. The oral law and written law were in equal standing.
They treated their traditions as laws.
Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
There is no human institution that can fill your spiritual life!
Only abiding in the vine!
Let me tell you,
tradition cannot save you!

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
What is tradition = Is rituals, customs, or beliefs passed down from generation to generations.
Those that grew up in the Church but yet have never had a breakthrough in the spirit or cannot defend truth, YOU ARE A RELIGIOUS/ TRADITIONAL person!
And you have a relationship with the Church, but not with God.
Thats why when things happen within the church, you leave bitter or hold grudges, but let me tell you if you are abiding in Christ nothing will move or cause you do stumble.
Because you are abiding in the VINE!
Because you under stand that you serve God and not man!
The law/traditions cannot save you, but Jesus Christ can!
By abiding in him
Jesus says “ i am the vine” and ye are the branches.
Vine = the source = without abiding in him we cannot do nothing, scriptures day.
We are an extension of the vine ( branch).
The purpose of abiding in the vine is to produce fruit.
Bible says,
“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away”
Taketh away = greek word = airo = to lift up
A vine needs to be wrap around the trellis, if not they will fall to the dirt and if a branch is on the ground it cannot bear fruit.
the reason why many people cannot bear fruit is because the devil has cast them down.
The number one enemy of Israel in the O.T. was the philistines. Goliath the giant was a philistine.
abiding in Christ produces power, identity in self, authority, confidence!
Philistine = wallowing in the dust
A. the serpent wallowed in the dust and tries to deceive you.
Satan attacks you when you are the weakest and not connected to the vine and you allow other things to influence you, by what you hear.
Moses sends 12 spies to spy out the promised land (canaan)

And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

They saw the evidence - the fruit but when they heard the voice of the other spies, then got discouraged and the bible says they wept.
All they had experienced in their past was defeat and fear, even though God has delivered them from the slavery and had done many miracles and still they had disconnect to the vine!
They allowed the voice of the enemy to discourage them and disconnect them from the vine.
Jesus says,
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”
They had listened to the voice of bad fruit.
Since the beginning of time God has told Adam & Eve
“be fruitful and multiply the earth”
But when the serpent came “wallowing in the dust. “
they heard the lies of satan and believed him and they disconnected from the vine.
BUT,
thank God the bible says that Jesus said if you are not bearing fruit and have fallen, he will lift you up!!!
He will lift you up when feel like your are in a war zone, battle after battle and you have fallen, but God will lift you up!
God is always restoring and lifting up people.
God lifted up the samaritan
God always when about doing good and up people.
Lazarus arise come up
the 10 leapers lifted up their voice to call on Jesus to asking for mercy
Later we find out that when Rahab receives the 2 spies. she expresses they they had heard the great things that God had been doing for them and they were full of fear.
While the spies were afraid,
that is because they were not connected to the vine.

WITHOUT ME YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING . SELF DEPENDENCE ALLOWS FAILURES, DOUBT, DISCOURAGAMENT.

But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
THE BIBLE SAYS ...

IT IS AT YOUR REACH, GOD IS EXTENDED HIS HAND AND REACHING OUT TO YOU, TO LIFT YOU UP!
God lifts you up on when you are down and if you have failed, God extends his hand reaching
out to you!

Purgeth - To make clean, cleanse, unproductive wood.

All rewards of pruning are with intention of increase in your life. God is all about increase in your life and not to stay complacent! “ i must decrease so that he way increase”

Vines are pruned once a year.....
If you go to a vineyard, you will in the spring the vines are fruitful with plenty of Grapes, however in the the ending of the year, the vinedresser starts the process of pruning where they cut of every branch and vine and leave it down to the BUD, they only leave 4-5 inches left.
All the fruit and vines grew that year were all cut down, you may say when you see the vines cut down and ugly, “WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!! WHY ARE THEY CUTTING DOWN THESE VINES AND GRAPES!!!????
God is telling you, if you thought you bore fruit this year, wait until next year!!!

Prune = rejoice, with sining and dancing.
Doesn’t make sense?! we have a picture of a vinedresser who is chopping and cutting away and throwing the vine it into the fire and rejoicing and doing so!!
How can God rejoice/ sing and dancing when he is cutting me?!
God is rejoice because in order for me to do greater things in your life, i must prune you!
I know it hurts, but keep on abiding because you are about to produce more fruit!!!
God prunes with the purpose of increase!
Story of Hannah - she was barren she could not produce a child, and she was desperate, and desiring more fruit (a child)
The bible said Hannah provoked God to bear fruit and her husband wanted Hannah to be complacent and satisfied with what she had.
During this time God was pruning Hannah she was persistent and remained abiding and seeking until she gave birth.

But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever.

So as we read that the twelves spies Moses had sent 10 came back with a negatives report.
God has done a great miracle from delivering them from egypt, but now God is going do even better things!
Therefore he must prune the branch/vine (his chosen people)

Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:

Briefly explain story of Rahab....
The two spies, needed a place to hide where they would not get caught. and where they could abide.
There they went into the home with Rahab,
The place where no one think they would be hiding.
You may be full of shame
guilt
unworthy
full of shame
not qualified
but if you have a ear and hear the voice of God GOD wants to dwell and abide in your life, God will lift you up and produce fruit in your life.
By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
Faith cometh by hearing the word of God.
DONT ONLY BE HEARERS OF THE WORD BUT DOERS OF GODS WORD
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Heard = “YOU ARE CLEAN BY THE WORDS I HAVE SPOKEN UNTO YOU!
SHE HEARD AND BELIEVED AND ABIDED THERE IN HER ROOM UNTIL THEY RESCUED HER AND HER FAMILY.
Rahab was a prostitute, she was used and abused and thrown around and abiding in different men.
“He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit”
